If I catch that seagull ...

Happy New Year everyone!

A fun start to the new year, with a few shots from the old one. We were on a mission … to find the Christmas lights in Cardiff Bay. The only problem, there weren’t any! So I looked around for a) something Christmassy, and b) something unusual. The first photo hits both categories as it was not until after I’d taken the shot and cropped it that I suddenly realised I had a title for the picture … “If I catch that seagull”. I think it’s a bit of fun, anyway.

The second is unusual, in fact it could also go into a category all of its own – too clever by half! I saw that the sunset could be viewed through two aligned windows in a piece of street sculpture, here’s the result. No prizes for artistic endeavour, just “too clever by half”!

    Dave, I liked the second image as the distant window framed the sunset within a shape that looked like the nearer window in reverse. The colours of the sun were subtly picked up in the flecks of yellowy green of the moss on the tiles, and the irregularity in the shapes of said tiles were echoed in the outline of the windows
    The subject matter of the first photo was rather too garish for me but nevertheless I loved the fact that it had been toned down by nature!

      You’re very kind Frances, it’s obvious the artists’ eye is at work in your keen observational skills that see things I haven’t seen. I think I need to take you out with me to show me things that you can see in a possible shot, to educate my eye so-to-speak. Still, I think I’m getting better, and everyone’s comments are helping immensely. Thanks.

    I really like the first image, David. It is colourful, and fun. Just what is needed at this dark and dreary time of year.

      I agree. I sometimes wonder whether there’s something seriously wrong with my eyesight though. Even though this shot was quite strongly cropped, I didn’t see the “guano” until after I’d done the crop! That’s when the idea of the title for the image jumped straight into my mind. Glad it amused you too.

    Forgot to say I like the second image, too. As you say – clever, indeed. Very well spotted and captured.

      In contrast with the soldiers, this one was a bit contrived. I did see the shot and then set about waiting for the sun to be in the right place in the windows, and that I was also in the right position. This meant I lost a little on the left-hand side of the shot which would have been better, I think.
